Doctors and specialists recommend getting at least six hours of sleep each night. Depending on the person, that amount can fluctuate between six and nine hours. Many factors play into the actual amount you need. The best way to understand the number of hours that’s right for you is to allow yourself to sleep through the night. If you still feel tired and groggy after six hours, increase the amount all the way to nine.
Sleeping Disorders and Having Trouble Sleeping at Night
In some cases a full night of sleep will still not leave you feeling rested. This is a sign that your sleep pattern is troubled or that there is some disturbance during the transitions between your sleep stages. Sleeping disorders are one of the main causes that can lead to poor quality sleep that leaves you feeling tired all of the time. If you are repeatedly having trouble sleeping at night you should consult a professional for help.
If you are already getting a full night of sleep and continue to show signs of sleep deprivation–don’try to oversleep. Sleeping more is not a good solution because getting too much sleep can be bad for you as well. In many cases sleeping more than nine hours can lead to increased health risks and also onsets of depression. It’s much better to try to solve the problem with your sleep rather than masking it by sleeping for half the day.
Effects of Not Getting Enough Sleep
Not getting enough sleep at night has many adverse effects on the mind and body. Most importantly it can reduce awareness and reaction time, which might lead to serious accidents. Imaging studies have conclusively shown changes in a brain activity when someone is subjected to continued sleep deprivation. Proper functionality is simply not possible when we do not get enough rest.
